What Is The Energy Assistance Program?

The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is designed to assist low-income households with winter heating expenses and summer cooling assistance. Services under this program are provided in Jasper, Lake, Newton and Porter Counties.



LIHEAP provides households with a ONE-TIME winter benefit for their energy bills. *Note: Deposits and Reconnection fees are NOT allowable under LIHEAP.

Who is Eligible for LIHEAP?

  • Renter or Homeowner
  • Household Income At or Below:

    • # of People* Monthly Annually
    1 Person $935 $11,225
    2 People $1263 $15,150
    3 People $1590 $19,075
    *(*(Add $3,925 for each additional person) *Figures for 2003-2004 program year.

Benefit amount is determined by:
  • household size
  • income (125% of Poverty)
  • heating fuel type
  • persons at risk (elderly, disabled, and children under 5 years)
  • geographic location

How Do I Apply For LIHEAP?

Call your local intake center. You will need to provide these documents:
  • Social Security Cards for all household members Proof of Income Current Utility Bills Copy of lease for subsidized housing tenants
A past due bill or disconnection notice is not required. Assistance is available for natural gas, propane, heating oil, kerosene, wood, and electricity. Households that are classified as subsidized with heat and electricity included in the rent may be eligible for assistance.
