Help for FamiliesHome Weatherization The Weatherization Program in Lake, Porter, Newton, and Jasper counties is designed to reduce the energy consumption of low-income families. The goal is to make homes safe, comfortable, and energy efficient while saving the occupant money. The program serves renters or owners, whether they live in mobile homes, traditional single-family homes, or apartments.
Furnace and moisture problems, as well as other potentially dangerous situations can be addressed through the program. A personal assessment of each home and its energy use is completed. Suggested energy saving practices are made through the Client Education Program. Certified Building Analysts conduct an energy audit of each home and prescribe measures to make the home more efficient. Weatherization Assistance Program includes the following services: Income eligibility is set at 200% of Federal Poverty Guidelines. Additionally, households with TANF or SSI recipients are categorically eligible for the program. Priority is generally given to households with elderly or disabled residents, and those with young children. Current funding levels enable NWICA to weatherize between 200 and 300 homes per year. Funding is provided through the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority. The Weatherization Program is a federally funded program (through US Department of Energy and Low Income Household Energy Assistance Program-LIHEAP). For more information call your local intake center or 2-1-1.
