News & Announcements
The Northwest Indiana A$$et Building Campaign’s dedication to improving the financial health of the area’s working poor is once again evidenced by their announcement of the 2010 Free Income Tax Preparation Schedule at area Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites. Earned income and adjusted gross income (AGI) must each be less than $43,352 ($48,362 married filing jointly) with three or more qualifying children; figures change for two, one and no children. The tax preparations will follow the 5th annual national Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) Day on January 28, 2011. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) provides a temporary increase in EITC, and expands the credit for workers with three or more qualifying children. These changes are temporary and apply to 2009 and 2010 tax years. Maximum credit for the 2010 tax year is $5,666 with three or more qualifying children; figures also change for two, one and no children. IRS Certified Volunteer tax preparers will be on hand to file federal and state taxes for walk-ins at sites listed below: FEBRUARY

Free help will be available at the community tax preparation sites, so individuals don’t have to pay high or unnecessary fees to commercial tax preparers or take “rapid refund loans.” Volunteers will also be available to help open a bank account, build savings with IDA’s, savings bonds and discuss ways that money can work FOR you. Pharmacy discount cards will also be available. NWI A$$et Building Campaign (ABC) is a community coalition of organizations and individuals dedicated to improving the financial stability of working families in the region. Members include Lake Area United Way, Northwest Indiana Community Action, United Way of Porter County, Gary Department of Community Development, Calumet Township, Indiana University Northwest, United Neighborhood Organizations, Greater Hammond Community Services, IVY Tech, Centier and First Midwest Banks, and others. Since 2003, ABC has trained volunteers and supported services to prepare 14,000 free tax returns which netted more than $13 million in federal refunds for local households.
