Happy Senior Independence Month

Americans of all ages greatly value self-determination and independence. This month, among celebrations of couples and peoples, another observance is significant to Northwest Indiana Community Action as an Area Agency on Aging.  February is designated as National Senior Independence Month!

According to the American Health Care Association and the National Center for Assisted Living, “This celebration was established to help seniors remain in control of their daily lives.”  We at NWICA play a special role in helping seniors stay independent.  Our designation as an Area Agency on Aging makes us an access point where people can learn about and access services.

Our Outreach and Preventative Health Coordinator Vernadine has referred many of her relatives to NWICA’s Resource Connections department which provided expert, unbiased medicine plan guidance. Vernadine said “My mom and three cousins all changed their diets after taking NWICA’s Chronic Disease Self-Management workshop.” She attests that thanks to this workshop one cousin’s health has improved drastically,” My cousin is healthier at 82 than when she was 70” she said.

With over 15 different programs that NWICA offers Northwest Indiana Seniors and Caregivers it makes it possible for Seniors to remain independent in NWI. We are proud that we support seniors through our various programs from Energy Assistance, Weatherization, Senior Nutrition and home adaptation making senior independent possible.
