Overcoming Darkness: Finding Hope as an Older Adult Abuse Survivor

As we age, we become more vulnerable to abuse and neglect. Elder abuse is a serious issue that affects millions of seniors every year. According to the National Council on Aging, approximately 1 in 10 Americans aged 60+ have experienced some form of elder abuse. As the local Area Agency on Aging, Northwest Indiana Community Action recognizes and protects older adults from abuse.

The Silent Struggle:

This is the story of one of our clients, Mary*, who has been receiving services through NWICA’s Community-Home Based Services. Mary and her case manager have worked together through many hardships, but the most impactful was when Mary was experiencing verbal abuse from a family member that left her feeling helpless and alone.

A Beacon of Light:

Mary’s Care Manager recognized that something was off; Mary seemed depressed and withdrawn. The Care Manager encouraged Mary to share what was bothering her.  Because of the trust that had been built between them, Mary confided about her experience.  The Care Manager responded immediately and, by taking the appropriate steps, was able to ensure that Mary would be safe from harm. Northwest Indiana Community Action is committed to safeguarding the well-being of the elderly and to providing security and hope for Mary and others who suffer in silence.

“I feel so much better since I talked with my Care Manager.  She has helped me with so many things. Her support made me realize I didn’t have to keep being mistreated,” said Mary.

Mary’s experience is an example of the transformative impact of NWICA’s Aging Services. June is Elder Abuse Awareness Month. Abuse can happen to any older person, by a loved one, a hired caregiver, or a stranger. Abuse can take many forms and can happen in any setting. If you or someone you know is experiencing elder abuse, it’s important to take action and seek help. If the abuse is occurring in an eldercare facility, you can contact the local Long Term Care Ombudsman at 800-826-7871.  For abuse in other settings, you can contact the police or Adult Protective Services. The APS 24-hour toll free emergency hotline is 800-992-6978.
