“Community Action, to me, is a calling.” ~ Gina Gomez, Community Services ManagerThe average age of a NWICA employee is 45 years. That means when our parents were children, 1 out of 5 people were poor. President Lyndon B. Johnson and rising political forces demanded change. The concept of federally funded, local Community Action Programs delivered by local Community Action Agencies in a nationwide Community Action Network – would be the primary vehicle for a new, federal War on Poverty. Northwest Indiana Community Action began in 1964 with Energy Assistance, Weatherization, Food Commodities and Head Start Programs. Today, NWICA no longer administers Head Start, but we added to our portfolio with Family Development, IDA and Housing Choice Voucher Programs.May is also National Community Action Month, which celebrates the stories and successes of Community Action Agencies and the 1,000+ Community Action Partnerships, while raising awareness of poverty related problems on both the city and state level. Nationally, the Community Action Partnership developed the Certified Community Action Professional (CCAP) certification which is a special and important distinction among community action professionals. At NWICA, we have 6 CCAP employees among us, Gina Gomez, Becky Harbinson, Kathy Margis, Robyn Freel, Anna Schoon, and Jennifer Malone. NWICA is one of the leading CAPS in Indiana with this many CCAP certifications! The Promise of Community Action changes people’s lives, embodies the spirit of hope, and improves communities. We care about the entire community, and we are dedicated to helping people, help themselves, and each other. Today, depending on which county you live in, 1 out of 10 people live in poverty. There is still more work to do and we will uphold our promise. Written by Gina Gomez ... See MoreSee Less
