VITA Program Returns to NWI

Northwest Indiana Community Action IRS-certified Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program will be providing free tax assistance for Northwest Indiana this spring.

“The VITA program is a very valuable community service. For many living in Northwest Indiana, their tax refund is the largest amount of cash they receive every year and VITA makes it possible for them to avoid paying a large amount of their refund to commercial tax preparation services” said Financial Services Manager Yvette Johnson.

The goal of VITA is to ensure that 100% of the refund amount is returned to the taxpayer. Those who make less than $60,000 per year, persons with disabilities, people over 60 years of age and limited English speakers are eligible. NWICA’S VITA program has returned over $459 million dollars in tax-credit back to the community.

The tax preparation services will begin in February 1 and will conclude on April 18, 2023. NWICA has over 25 certified and trained volunteers available this season by appointment to prepare basic tax returns. “Volunteering for VITA is a very rewarding experience. This is my way to give back to my community. “said a VITA Volunteer.

NWICA will be providing its VITA program at 10 locations though out the region.

Starting on Monday, February 6, 2023 and every Monday and Tuesday through March, by appointment only, tax clients may drop off their tax documents to: MONDAYS · East Chicago Public Library between the hours of 2pm-5pm.
